Hey Fellow Filmmakers!
Soo, I’m trying to write my first ‘short’ screenplay and I only have a month to write it…It’s not taken me too long to realize that my first story idea is going to be way too large and complicated for a ‘short’. I’ve only ever written a ’ full feature length’ screenplay, so writing and directing a ‘short’ is pretty new to me. I can tell that I’m trying to condense a feature length story and it’s definitely not working..So how do I write a 10-15 min short? Have any of you made short films? I would love to watch some examples…I’m a bit confused as how to make an interesting story, without starting at the beginning and ending at ‘the end’. I’m thinking that shorts must be a story much more compact, and even perhaps a ‘pop in’ and a ‘pop out’ of a story world, rather than a beginning, middle, and end - journey… Anyhow,
whatever help and info you can bring my way, it would be much appreciated!
God Bless, AJ

I’ve fallen in love with a sentiment I’ve read as expressed by Guillermo del Toro on several occasions… I’ll give you my best effort at bowdlerizing it as respectfully (to both CF and Guillermo’s intent) as I can:

“Adapting a work by someone else is like marrying a widow. You want to try and be as respectful as possible of the previous husband, but eventually you’ve got to take her to bed…”

This discussion is inspired by Jenni Noordhoek’s comment elsewhere that she’d like to see The Horse and His Boy as a film produced in the Narnia series, as well as the current discussion as to the difficulties (and hope for) an adaptation of The Silmarillion.

So, in general - how would you adapt?

I see two likely scenarios for a writer to be given a realistic chance to do an adaptation:

First, the writer really loves the work, and is looking for the opportunity to bring the story to life in another medium.

Second, a producer has acquired the work and likes the track record of the screenwriter and assigns the screenwriter to adapt the pre-existing work.

In both cases, I think the key is that the writer bring their own passion and perspective on the story.

There’s a great apocryphal story (wish I could find it via Google!) about an extra in some famous movie (let’s call it Men in Black) where he’s in the background at the bus stop; he tells his friend “hey, I’m in this new movie coming out!” and the friend asks “cool, what’s it about?”

He replies “It’s about this guy waiting for a bus…”

So the perspective a creative brings isn’t always in the best interest of the story - it would be terrible for a writer to write MIB from that one actor’s perspective!

But I also think a writer has to bring their own passion to the project.

If a producer were to ask me to do a Jane Austin adaptation, I’d have to explain very clearly that I haven’t been drawn to her work deeply, and that what I create is much more likely to be a take such as Clueless did - a movie I did enjoy that was “inspired” by Jane Austin.

If that’s what the producer wants or not, they need to know that’s what they’re going to get from me!

I also more and more think that if a film’s chances of succeeding are 10%, then the only thing I’m convinced can shift those odds is a film having a strong, singular driving vision, preferably one that begins with the screenwriter.

I also think that raises the odds to only 10.0001%, but still!

So that’s my primary perspective on adaptation: you have to love the source material in the best way that you can, and then it’s your responsibility as a writer to bring your own vision and perspective to it.

Thoughts?!

Curiously,
