I am writing off Benjamin Curlee’s score “Riding into the Sunset”. So: To start:

I have listened to the score at least ten times now (taking a few timing notes ) and have been brainstorming for quite a while on HOW to tell a story with this amazing score. (and how to write a low budget film for it too )

Idea 1: Two cowhands, one older with a lot of experience and one fresh in the saddle, are taking a trip into town. In town, they meet the bad guys, who threaten them. On the way out of town, the cowhands are ambushed and the older hand is shot. Younger hand takes care of his wounds while also avoiding the encircling bad guys. The older hand dies. Younger hand gets his horse stampeded and is chased by the bad guys. He comes upon a burned out house, his former home. He then confronts the bad guys, they have a shoot out and Younger hand wins. He than rides off into the sunset, the town at rest again.

Idea 2: Two cowhands, one older with a lot of experience and one fresh in the saddle, are leading a herd to the market. They are watched by rustlers, who rush in and steal the herd, wounding the older hand in the process. Younger hand tends the older hand’s serious looking wounds. Older hand makes younger hand promise to get the cows back and then dies/goes unconscious. Younger hand goes off to find the cows in a draw with the rustlers at camp beside them. Younger hand steals back the cows and has a final showdown with the leader of the rustlers. Younger hand wins, older hand survives, and the cows are again on their way to market.

Idea 3: A young couple (maybe newly weds) are out riding/on a trip on horseback. Bad Guy sees them (maybe is hiding out for them). Bad Guy rides in, shoots the Guy and kidnapps the Girl. Guy is knocked out and Girl is concerned for him. Bad Guy don’t care and rides off with Girl. Guy wakes up and looks for Girl. He finds Girl in Bad Guy’s camp, in bad circumstances. Guy has showdown with Bad Guy. Guy wins, thus rescuing the Girl. The couple than ride off into the sunset.

Bad Guy ‘could’ be Indian, but doesn’t have to be. I’m not attached to any of these ideas and am willing to mix and match .

What do you think, Benjamin?

Can any of you personally recommend a decent microphone that’s between $200 and $500? I’ll mainly be using it in conjunction with my HV30, but if it could double as an ADR mic, that’d be great.

Thanks,

PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

The site founder, Nathaniel Bluedorn, said that he wanted more talk of work and sharing of information around here, and a handful of people said that they would love to learn more about the scoring process, both from a filmmaker’s and a composer’s standpoint.

So, I’m going to be talking about the scoring process for Doraleous and Associates here in this thread, and each week, as an episode is released, I’ll talk for a bit about the music to the episode, from spotting to temp. tracks/inspiration to the actual production to feedback from the writers/producers and the audience.

Please understand that I’m doing this not to arrogantly and loudly proclaim that I am the world’s leading expert on film scoring, but because Nathaniel wants more stuff like this happening around here, and there seems to be kind of a void here for this kind of stuff. So, if any other composers want to share about their work on various projects, by all means, do so! I’m not trying to claim a monopoly on the topic, not by any stretch.

I’m choosing this series to talk about because it’s an ongoing project; we’re hoping to do at least 24 weekly episodes, so that’ll give us plenty of time for discussion. And I do mean “us”; please feel free to ask questions, give feedback, or even constructive criticism; I want this to be an open dialogue between me and anyone interested about the scoring process for this series!

The catch is, this series does have some elements that some people around here may find offensive, namely some “colorful” language in places. Not much, mind you, but some around here (especially the super-conservatives and legalists) will almost definitely take offense to it. Obviously, I don’t have a problem with said language, and it’s not my intent to offend anyone. If you don’t like it, then no one’s making you watch it. Please don’t blast this thread with hate-posts or turn this into some kind of discussion about whether or not I should even be working on this series.

But, for those of you that don’t want to bother with this series for whatever reason, I have good news! I’ll be starting another thread on The Alphabet Sonnets, an iPhone application that Calix and I are working on right now, and I’ll talk about the music to that, as well. Calix and I will also be creating a thread on a short “Christian” film of his that I’m scoring called The Dream, and as I understand it, our entire back-and-forth dialogue throughout the scoring process will be held there, so that you readers can witness the process firsthand!

While you should check those future threads out if you’re interested, I also highly recommend spending some time here and watching this show. It’s a really good show, epic but with lots of humor, and based on what I’ve seen/what I know (through the first 8 episodes or so), it’s only getting better!

I’ll talk about the pilot either today or tomorrow; it was released last Thursday.

New episodes will be released on every Thursday (with episode 2 being released tomorrow). I’ll likely discuss it sometime this weekend; my work week this week is slam-packed with various stuff.

So, I hope that you all find this useful! Again, please feel free to share any thoughts you have, ask any questions, or whatever, but please keep it on-topic and directly related to what I’m intending this thread to be!

> hey calix.
>
> i’m sorry about the wait,
> but i just got the last bit of artwork in from one of my
> animators TODAY.
> so i JUST finished compositing it here at the office after
> work… like 5 minutes ago.
>
> here it is…
>
> it’s a SUPER low-res version.
> but i just wanted to get you something NOW,
> and i can up res it and send a bigger version to you later.
>
> let me know what you think.
> i had to do some makeshift stuff (creating elements i didn’t
> get from them on the fly) and rush it last minute.
>
> hope all is well and blessed!
