Re: Costumes

I suppose it’s okay to post pictures of my costumes here? I make them for fun and I think I’d like to for films at some point. I’ve been sewing for a little over a year.

In the pictures of costumes I made my younger sister, that’s her modeling them. Otherwise it’s me, except for the dress I made for a friend. I meant to just post links to them, but apparently the forum puts the actual pictures in the post.

Wow, cool costumes! I love them! Actually, I finally went ahead and registered to post on the forums mostly because I wanted to ask you a question about them.  smile

I have the same pattern you used for your red & paisley skirt - McCalls 4090 - and I’ve been wanting to make it. (I know which one it is because I recognized both the skirt and the instruction page that you photographed your ‘ranger gorget’ on top of. wink ) The pattern calls for “twill, silk, satin, embroidered silk, embroidered satin, dupioni, or lightweight home decorating fabrics” .

Now, my question is, what type of fabric did you use for your skirt? I’m not sure what kind to use when I make mine.

And I love the red dress, and the brown one. Which patterns did you use for those?

Thanks for answering my questions!

Thank you. smile

I’m not sure what kind of fabric the solid red is. A friend gave it to me. It might be linen. The paisley, I think, is a light-weight home decor fabric (the friend gave that to me, too). I think most lightish fabrics would work for that pattern. I don’t think I’ll use it again, though. I’ve been won over to circle skirts because they require less fabric, no gathering, and have fewer seams, but are still nice and full (plus you don’t really need a pattern, as there are instructions for them all over the internet. If you want a pattern, they’re the same as poodle skirts. But most poodle skirt patterns aren’t long enough for tall people who want them long enough for the Renaissance time period, so you might need to add a couple of inches to the bottom). That’s just me, though.

For the red dress I used Simplicity 4940. For the brown, McCall’s 5499. But that pattern has princess seams, which I didn’t want to do for that particular dress, so I cut some of the pieces out as one instead of two. I also left the sleeve open below the elbow, added eyelets, and laced it closed.

I have more information on my other costumes on my costume blog: http://eldameldo.wordpress.com

Thanks! I bookmarked your blog and will be checking back there often. It inspires me to actually go sew…honestly, I hate sewing but if I want costumes, I have to because my mom won’t sew those for me. smile So sew I shall!

I also liked that shirt…going to look for that Simplicity pattern sometime when they’re on sale. smile

Thanks for the information! I know what kind of fabric I’m looking for now! smile

You’re welcome! smile I’ll probably update my blog in the next week or two with things I’m making to wear to the Georgia Renaissance Festival.

That sounds neat!

Is that sword you’re holding in your avatar yours? I’ve kind of been wondering…I happen to like swords. smile

Are you going to make costumes for films someday? That would be fun, wouldn’t it? smile

Yes, it’s mine. I ordered it from Defender Knives. smile

I’m not sure. I’m somewhat torn between that and writing.

Some of my latest creations, which I wore to the Renaissance festival:

I made the hat, bodice, shirt, gorget, skirt, bracers (from two leather glasses cases), and pouch.

Katherine, you’ve done really nice work, I’m impressed.  Are you selling these types of things anywhere?
