Nathaniel, this may be a bit of a headache, but what if it was a 2-tiered competition?  Sort of a Pro/Am competition?

One side competes for a larger prize and Hulu for a higher entry fee, another side competes for a lower prize with a lower entry fee?

I would just enter the amateur one, cause there would be a better chance at winning! wink jk

I would prefer it to be in March, but that’s just me. I also like the idea of the top 3 getting prizes…and I would be totally fine with you raising it to $20 dollars…20 bucks is nothing considering what a great networking tool it is to enter. It’s an investment.

I like Ryan’s idea. A $25 contest, winner gets exposure on at least Cross Bridge and probably hulu plus a cash prize and a “hobbyist” category, maybe $5 or $10 with some prize that is not cash.

Security elements are a must. Maybe three elements with multiple choices for each element.

Possibly even two sets of judges so the workload isn’t immense?  Could have one set of judges more inclined toward helping people getting started in filmmaking, the other more critical on a professional level?

Not sure what you mean. Care to elaborate?

You need to include 3 elements, but there would be a choice for each element.

1. one of these 5 phrases

2. one of these 5 objects

3. one of these 5 locations

If we do a second tier I would recommend a peer review to get the top 5 and the judges pick from there. Hopefully that wouldn’t rock Daniel’s world too much. Maybe restrict voting to members who have 3+ months tenure.

Oh, I like my world rocked. wink

Nathaniel and I have talked about global voting just for more viewer participation, so I have plans on implementing things like that.

I gotta say, I’m loving some of these ideas. My plan was to use this contest engine one more time and then rewrite in a better method for better usability (I’m literally hacking EE’s database to let us use it like we are), but if these ideas click, I may rewrite for March/April (pending other projects/school permitting).

Simply said? You name it, I can probably code it. wink grin

Nathanial/judges, you may want to look into how some of the other 24/36/48 contests are run.  I worked with a lady who did one of those and the one she participated in gave them a theme and security elements.  It might be helpful to give a fairly broad theme, kinda like the holiday one we just did, and than give some security elements related to that theme.  Even with the broad theme you gave with this last one, everyone gave a very different take on it.

Member voting can become a popularity contest. Whoever can muster a lot of friends and relatives wins. However, member voting builds community participation. Doorpost uses member voting combined with judges. They’re able to select the best films that way.

I had a film in a Canada wide young film maker festival/contest once, the festival took place in a city far from my home town. There was a audience choice award, so the audience votes. On of the films was made by a local film maker, over half the audience was from his school in support of him. No other film stood any chance of wining that ward.
