Is 30fps just as good as 24fps?

Is 30fps just as good as 24fps?

I’m looking to buy a camera in the next month or so, and most of the HV or HD (digital)  shoot at 30 frames-per-second.
But I have always heard that you should try to get 24 fps.  :?
Do you know, or do you have any camera suggestions that are under 175-200$ (the lower the better smile )

Please help :!:  :|

Thanks.

No, 30 is not as good as 24…practically every movie in the world worth watching was filmed in 24p.

And I hate to say this, but I think you’re going to be pretty hard pressed to get a decent video camera for under $200…you’d probably have to find a miracle deal on eBay or craigslist.

Take it from hard learned experience: 24p is absolutely, positively, hands-down better than 30p!

24p has a psychological effect on audiences that 30p doesn’t have. 30p is realistic to what our eyes see, while 24p is more blurred. So we feel that the movie we’re watching is more epic or artistic or professional.

Is there any difference between shooting at 24p and shooting at 30 (or 60fps) and rendering as 24p?

Actually, it depends. Since it has become available, most people default to 24P. Many times, this is a mistake. Just like lighting, framing, etc. the frame rate is a TOOL and should be a motivated choice.

I shoot 24P, 30P and even still some 60i or 60p. If you find a cheap camera that shoots 60i, you can convert that to 24P fairly easily now (note converting 30P is much harder).

24P won’t make you a better shooter, a better director, better editor, better writer, etc. There are many components to get something to feel like a film. I say, get a cheap camera and shoot away.

There are situations where shooting 60i and then converting are better.  Specifically when shooting under florescent lights.  They cycle at 60 hz and shooting at 24p will cause them to dim and brighten slightly during a take.

Good point Adam, with a higher end camera you can adjust the shutter to compensate but that feature is not available on low and medium end pro-sumer cameras.

Neither one is better…unless you are looking for a more filmic look as most movies are shot at 24 fps. Also, don’t believe anyone who tells you that 30p and 60i are the same. They are not and look quite different. 30p will look more like regular video (60i) than 24p, but still, I believe, looks better than 60i-which looks like the news to me.

As far as price goes, your not going to find a video camera for $200 that shoots 24P. Your best bet would be to find a used HV20.

Yes, 24fps is better than 30, but don’t worry about it. A used HV20 is good if you can find one. If you can’t then just get the best camera you can and shoot as much as you can! While a professional camera is an important tool, nothing matters as much as the talent. I would take a professional behind a consumer camera then I would an inexperienced one behind a Panavision any day.

Also, just having 24P will not make your cinematography any better. There is much more to the look of film than a 24fps image.
